For the past three years as A Community of Women has organized Take Back The Night, president Denese R. Peebles has noticed something.

"It seems everyone associates the evening with domestic violence only," she said.

This year, she hopes the event will get back to its true roots.

"This is for all types of violence," Peebles emphasized.

The fourth annual Take Back The Night will take place Thursday, Oct. 4. The community is asked to join A Community of Women and Guardian Family Services at 6:30 p.m. to march from Guardian Family Services, located at 117 W. 10th St., to the Massac County Courthouse. Those who can't make the march are asked to meet the group at the courthouse steps for the candlelit program.

This year's speakers will be Jane Etheridge, director of  MSU Women's Center, and Regina Varvel.

The focus of the 2012 Take Back The Night is "on the safety of our homes and streets for everyone," Peebles said. "Unfortunately, women and children seem to get the brunt of the sexual and domestic violence so that has received more of the focus of Take Back the Night in the past. I believe the more we can get the point across to the community that violence touches everyone and it takes all of us to bring an end to it, the better the turnout and support for the evening will be."

Take Back The Night is an event held by organizations dedicated to helping women achieve safety and empowerment.  However, the night is not for women only.

"We encourage men, women and children of all ages to attend," Peebles said. " Violence is a dark part of society that affects us all.  Take Back The Night seeks to end sexual violence in all of its forms, including sexual assault, sexual abuse, dating violence and domestic violence. This event empowers survivors —   men, women and children — in the healing process and reminds all of us of our responsibility in bringing about change. Take Back The Night’s goal is to create safe communities, raise awareness and take back our streets."
