Quincy’s powerful Notre Dame team won the girls’ 3A title last week at Normal by a score of 62-45 over Vernon Hills. The win marked Quincy’s third straight state championship.
On the boys side, there was a full slate of action Tuesday night, March 5, as Gallatin County’s Hawks took on Nokomis at Carbondale in Class A Super-Sectional play.
The 6 p.m. Hawks’ game was the first of a Class A/AA Super-Sectional doubleheader with Harrisburg’s Bulldogs tangling with the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
The remaining four teams from each classification will do battle Friday and Saturday to crown the respective state champs.
The smaller schools will play the afternoon sessions with the larger schools playing the night games.
The Harrisburg-Teutoplis winner will square off against the winner of the Riverton and St. Joseph-Ogden tilt.
Lurking in the wings for the Class AA Super-Sectional winner are some familiar names.
Winnebago faces Monmouth at DeKalb and South Holland’s Seton Academy takes on Chicago Providence St. Mel at Joliet.
Teutopolis precluded a rematch of last year’s Harrisburg and Breese Central by bouncing Breese Central in double overtime in the Greenville sectional.
