Two men dead after drowning near Joppa

Two men, Delburt Vince Snell, 50, and William Brian Burkhead, 26, are dead after a drowning Monday evening near Joppa.

According to Brian Horn, a member of Emergency Service Disaster Agency and the Joppa Fire Department, the call was dispatched at 8:35 p.m. when it was reported two men were missing in the Ohio River, where they had been swimming.

The two men were last spotted about 75 feet from the shore before going missing.

Horn said there were several agencies on the scene, including Massac County Fire Department, Massac County ESDA, McCracken County DES, Illinois State Police, McCracken County Sheriff's Department, Joppa Fire Department, Olmsted Fire Department, Kentucky Department of Natural Resources as well as the Coast Guard.

Also involved in the search for the men were dive teams from Massac and Franklin counties that were using sonar equipment to aid the search.

Horn said Burkhead's body was recovered first at 1:09 a.m. and Snell's body was found on Tuesday at 8:27 a.m.

Burkhead was Snell's nephew. Witnesses on the scene reported Burkhead went underwater and Snell went into the river in attempt to save him. Both men were from Grand Chain.
