At Monday night’s Massac Unit One board meeting, the school district officially hired a new superintendent and lost its new head football coach.

When the board turned its attention to personnel items from closed session, the board unanimously approved a motion hiring Dennis Smith as the new Unit One Superintendent, to replace retiring Superintendent Bill Hatfield, who will exit June 30.

The board, contingent upon a satisfactory agreement between Smith and the district, hired Smith, who had resigned as Harrisburg’s Superintendent.

Among the resignations was that of John Warren, MCHS head football coach, who was hired at the beginning of the school year to replace long-time coach Kelly Glass. Warren, will leave Massac Unit One to work in Bradenton, Fla., where he has been named Bradenton Southeast High School’s new head football coach.

The board also accepted the resignation of Amanda Smith, aid at Franklin Elementary School and also hired: Leslie Armstrong, aid at Metropolis Elementary School; Jessica Mansker, MCHS color guard sponsor; and Barbara Lindsay, five hour cook at MCHS.

Under the administrative report, the board heard how the extremely cold temperatures have made it has difficult for the district to keep the older buildings heated. “There have been lots of issues,” said Hatfield and he said it has been expensive for the district, as some of the units have broken down.

The board found out the district has been approved for a maintenance grant, which would allow for one of the rooms at Metropolis Elementary School to be divided.

Hatfield and the board reviewed the district’s procedures involving school closings and discussed school safety again with Metropolis Elementary School Principal Laura Walker, who brought back some additional data to the board she did not have at her last presentation.
