Virgil John Kennedy, 87, of Montgomery, Texas, formerly of Metropolis, died Friday, March 22, 2013.

Born March 31, 1925 in Metropolis, Mr. Kennedy graduated with honors from Cairo High School, joined the U.S. Navy and entered the Naval ROTC Program at Notre Dame University.

Upon graduation, Mr. Kennedy was commissioned as an Ensign and served on the Battleship USS North Carolina. After serving in World War II, he attended the University of Illinois and received a degree in geology. He later obtained his master’s degree. He also served in the Korean War.

Mr. Kennedy spent his professional career with Shell Oil Co. and retired after 38 years of service. He was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church of Conroe, Texas.

Survivors include one son, Doug Kennedy and wife Linda; one daughter, Elizabeth Clare Conces and husband Robert; his grandchildren, Kimberly Smith and husband Lee, Kari Kennedy, Jennifer Nickerson and husband Todd, Josh Cheatham and wife Gayle, Allison Makus and husband Dennis and Anna Everett and husband Mark; his great-grandchildren, Savannah Smith, Brock and Emma Nickerson, Colby and Morgan Cheatham and Kahlan Makus; three sisters-in-law, Mary Kennedy, Louise Joergins and Audrey Krummrich and husband Richard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Mae Tegtmeier Kennedy; one son, Bruce Walter Kennedy; his parents, Clay and Minnie Kennedy; one brother, James Kennedy; and one sister, Emma Kennedy.

Funeral service was held Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Lorin Darst officiating.

A private burial followed at Garden Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lee Smith, Todd Nickerson, Brock Nickerson, Josh Cheatham, Dennis Makus and Mark Everett.

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Traditions Hospice.

Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery, Texas was in charge of arrangements.
