In recent weeks there has been much talk about Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn's decision to close some state sites in southern Illinois. With the annual Fort Massac Encampment just weeks away from being held, Fort Massac Site Superintendent Chris McGinnis said he would be "absolutely shocked," if the state were to decide to close Fort Massac State Park completely. "It is the second most visited state park," said McGinnis.

Likewise, he said it would also be a shock to him if Mermet Lake Wildlife Refuge were closed. And, he said he has not heard any information to pertaining to a closure of an Illinois Department of Natural Resources site in Massac County.

McGinnis said in a telephone interview Friday that the only thing that remains closed is the historic fort, due to numerous structural issues that deemed its closure to the public earlier this year. According to McGinnis, the Encampment is still proceeding as planned.

McGinnis still has not heard any information regarding when the fort may be repaired. And, at this point, emphasizes he does not know when the fort will be open again to the public.

Because of the fort's closure, some community members are encouraging the public to participate in a letter writing campaign in reference to the fort.

Persons wanting to voice concerns about the fort, are urged to write to Illinois Department of Natural Resources to inquire when the fort will be fixed, when it will re-open and if they choose, mention the historic and tourism value of the people being able to actually enter the fort and experience what life in a frontier fort was like.

Anyone wishing to write a letter, may address it to: Marc Miller, Director, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, 1 Natural Resources Way, Springfield, IL 62701
