Irvin Schaffer, 98, of Metropolis, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at his home.

Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at St. John’s Cemetery on Waldo Church Road with Rev. David Deem officiating.

Born in Massac County on Aug. 10, 1913, Mr. Schaffer was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s E & R Church. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a staff sergeant during World War II in New Guinea. After returning from the war, he and his brother-in-law, Roy Arensman, established Metropolis Builders Supply, which they successfully operated for many years.

Mr. Schaffer was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Metropolis.

Survivors include one son, Alan Schaffer and wife Denise of Metropolis; one daughter, Joan Schmidt and husband Clyde of Metropolis; two granddaughters, Clara Schmidt Tengwall and husband Jamie of Grand Prairie, Texas and Amelia Schmidt of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandsons, Andrew Inman and wife Jane and Lukus Inman and wife Leah, all of Metropolis; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Deem of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Amelia Moller Schaffer; his wife of 64 years, Frances Riepe Schaffer; one son, James “Jimmy” Schaffer; and three sisters, Cora Korte, Mabel Arensman and Reba Schaffer.

There will not be any visitation. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis is in charge of arrangements.
