Born Sept. 12, 1933 in Metropolis, Mr. Austin graduated from Metropolis High School and attended Parsons College in Iowa.
Soon after, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in Fontainebleau, France. Mr. Austin retired from Commonwealth Edison in the mechanical maintenance department. He was a member of VFW Post 4495, a member of First United Methodist Church in Taylorville and an avid golfer for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Judy Moore Austin; one son, Doug Austin and wife Najela of Chantilly, Va.; three grandsons, Paul, John and Daniel Austin; one brother, Charles Austin and wife Barbara of Metropolis; two sisters, Helen Wilkens and his twin sister, Roberta Dillow, both of Metropolis; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kes and Bertha Hale Austin; one son, Matthew Austin; one brother, Herbert Austin; and one sister, Clara Evans.
A private family service was held Dec. 5 at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Pastor Becky Lembke officiating.
