With graduation losses taking a heavy toll on Murphy, the ‘Devils aren’t the powerhouse they were last year. But with the Patriots still playing without the services of three starters, the game figured to be close and it was.
Despite trailing for virtually the entire game, Massac closed to within two points with just under four minutes left in the game on the strength of an 8-0 run keyed by a pair of Malcom Amos buckets. At the 3:50 mark, trailing 39-37, Massac’s offense sputtered as they scored just one more bucket in the game. A basket in the lane by Kevin Gude gave Murphy a little breathing room and then Drew Novara drove the final nail in Massac’s coffin with a three pointer to put the game out of reach for Massac.
Coach Joe Hosman commented afterwards, “We just missed some open shots like we’ve done all year. They got the big three pointer from the corner late in the game and that pretty much was the end for us. We knew they were a pretty good three point shooting team and they knocked down a bunch of ‘em on us.”
For the record, the ‘Devils made seven triples in the game. Murphy’s Pierre House led all scorers with 17 points while Massac was led by Malcom Amos with 13. Ryan English just missed double figures with nine points.
