Is this the state of the game?

If you saw last Friday night’s basketball game between the Patriots of Massac County High School and the Rangers from Benton, you saw the best and the worst of high school basketball.

While it was nowhere near the spectacle of the Cairo game in the 2003-04 season, an otherwise entertaining and hard-fought game was marred by the crude behavior of some of the visiting fans and the ultra-aggressive physical play of a couple of Rangers.

I’ll be the first to admit that, on the face of it, the officiating level in high school basketball isn’t what we would wish it to be, but I’m realistic enough to see that the game isn’t the same game I grew up watching and loving.

Refereeing a basketball game nowadays is somewhat akin to refereeing a WWE wrestling match and I hold no illusions that I could do any better.
