Funeral service will be at held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Metropolis with co-celebrants; Father Christopher Mujule, Father Joseph Trapp, Father Dan Friedman and Father Jerry Werth.
Mrs. Newton worked in her early years as a dietician at St. Francis and St. Anthony’s hospitals in Oklahoma and later as church secretary at St. Rose of Lima.
Phyllis and George moved to Metropolis 38 years ago following his retirement from Trunkline Gas Company in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by 11 nieces and nephews, Jim Verschelden and his wife Pat of Metropolis, Bill Newton and his wife Beverly of Paxico, Kan., Jimmy Newton and his wife Marsha of Overbrook, Kan., Mary Francis Johnson and her husband Fred of Wichita, Kan., George Newton and his wife Janet of Alma, Kan., Cathy Verschelden and her husband Matt of Fairview, Kan., Mike Newton of McFarland, Kan., Marilyn Church and her husband Edwin of Kansas City, Kan., Richard Verschelden and his wife Marti of Newton, Kan., Becky Commons and her husband Ed of Carmichaels, Pa., and Phyllis Ann Nelson of Plains, Mont.; several great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and many friends and her church family at St. Rose of Lima.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Leo Murphy and Lelia Cordner; and her husband, George Newton.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis. Rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m.
