Lightning hit the department around 3 p.m.
"I was in the building when it hit. After the building shook, it sounded like a whole hoard of snakes going across the ceiling as it was slithering across. It was pretty scary," Chief Harry Masse said.
Masse came before the Metropolis City Council Monday night telling them of the "extensive damage" sustained to the department's equipment.
He noted that while "we're still tallying everything up" known damage totals at least $30,000 to recorders, a phone switch, the surveillance system, a radio, the radio control board and the scramble board.
"We should know more tomorrow (Tuesday)," Masse said, noting that at the time of the meeting Jackson Purchase Radio representatives were at the department doing patch work "to get us up and running."
