Last year’s event ran afoul of some nasty weather, so the 2011 results kind of messed up the history, but this year’s event which just concluded Sunday afternoon got things back on track.
The father and daughter team of Jerry Throgmorton and Jenny Throgmorton King fought off a slow Sunday start and a hard charge from Mark Westerfield and Lisa Bremer to take the overall title and the trophy with a two-day total of 118.
The pair scorched Metropolis Country Club’s par 71 layout on Saturday with a 13 under par 58 to take the first day lead. Despite a slow Sunday start, the pair managed to put six strokes between themselves and their nearest challengers. Almost 200 golfers braved the near triple digit temperatures to compete in this year’s event, and despite the ever-worsening drought conditions the area is under, course superintendent Bill Johnson and his crew had the track in great shape considering the lack of rainfall.
