John Ross Hillyard, 88, of Enfield, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.

Born Nov. 17, 1923 in Saline County, Mr. Hillyard was a farmer and carpenter and a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church near Enfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Gunter and husband John of Enfield; two sons, Bob Hillyard and wife Loretta of Metropolis and Bruce Hillyard and wife Kim of Norris City; seven grandchildren, Ginger Phillips, Stacy Gunter, Jayme Cowling, Michael Hillyard, Steven Hillyard, Ryan Hillyard and Krystal Gholson; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Grace Moseley Hillyard; his parents, Virgil Cleatus and Lenora Elizabeth Marlin Hillyard; one sister, Esther Kieser; and one brother, Robert Hillyard.

Funeral service was held Friday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. John Gunter and Mike Fields officiating. Burial followed at West Union Cemetery near Carmi with military rites conducted by Carmi VFW and American Legion.
