This has to be the best time of the year.

We know that this miserably hot summer is drawing to an end, college football is almost ready to start, baseball season is getting down to brass tacks with World Series hopes starting to rise and fall and high school athletics, at least the fall variety, are gonna crank up this week.

The Patriot football team takes to the road to tangle with Herrin’s Tigers Friday night.

The volleyball team opens with some very high expectations playing Tuesday night and Saturday in a conference tournament at Herrin.

Girls’ tennis debuted Tuesday at Carmi, and the boys soccer travels to Ballard County for a Thursday afternoon encounter.

Both golf teams have already done some major damage, and the Massac’s cross country teams have just a smidge more preparation time as they start Aug. 29.

Some folks cotton to the spring season as basketball winds down and baseball just gets going, but for me, this is the best time of the year.
