Marie Dodgens-Gillespie, 66, of Metropolis, passed away Friday evening, Aug. 24, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Marie was born July 24, 1946 in Philadelphia, Pa. She was the daughter of James and Matilda Twiley Long.

Marie is survived by her loving companion for the past 28 years, Douglas Gillespie of Metropolis; her children, Vincent Dodgens and wife Catherine of Sumpter, Ore., Sheila Bender and husband David of Sacramento, Calif. and Nicky Dodgens and wife Beth of Starr, S.C.; her grandchildren, Misti Dodgens, David William Bender, Josh Dodgens, Jacob Dodgens, Haley Dodgens, Nicole Dodgens and Noel Dodgens; two brothers, James Long of Anderson, S.C. and Carl Long of Brunswick, Ga.; and her dear friend, Wanda Rose of Marion.

In her youth, Marie had worked as a laborer in a cotton mill. During her years in California, Marie also worked as a housekeeper in a number of motels.

Marie enjoyed handcrafts, including knitting and needlepoint. She also loved reading and flowers, especially wildflowers.

Marie had a loving and kind spirit even during difficult circumstances in her life.

A graveside service was held Monday at Zion Cemetery, east of Ozark, with Dr. Ed Hollis officiating.

Bailey Funeral Home of Vienna was in charge of arrangements.
