Nickerson, a senior all-purpose back, scored five touchdowns and racked up 300 yards of total offense by himself.
But Herrin’s backfield outdid “Daz,” piling up almost 400 yards of rushing offense on a mind-blowing 61 attempts.
Massac scored first on an 11-yard run from Nickerson with 8:48 left in the first quarter. Senior placekicker Jon Haverkamp split the uprights with the point after and the 2012 season was off to a good start.
Herrin took only two minutes and 14 seconds to knot the score though, with Dayvonte Branch burning the Pats on a 42-yard pass reception for a big chunk of their drive yardage.
At the 6:34 mark the score was 7-7. Fourteen seconds later however, following a touchback on the kickoff, Nickerson gathered in a quick pass from Cameron Koch and outran Herrin’s defenders 80 yards for another touchdown. Haverkamp once again booted the PAT through for a 14-7 lead for Massac.
Herrin put up six points at the 9:48 mark in the second quarter and scored their last first half points with 2:55 left in the half.
