Beginning in 2006, under Coach Gary Pirtle and now twice under current Coach Kimberly Hille Futrell, the girls have gone, seen and conquered. The Lady Patriots bested Rochester by four strokes at 665 to 669.
This year’s conquest came under some brutal conditions at Decatur’s Red Tail Run Golf Course.
The cool, almost cold conditions, for Friday’s first round action gave way to some wet and stormy weather for Saturday’s final round.
As a matter of fact, the girls’ Class A final round was the only final round completed. The girls’ AA final round was scrubbed after about 90 minutes of play as was the boys’ Class A and AA finals.
And once again, Massac’s “steady Eddy” team-style play proved deadly for the competition.
After day one, Massac and Rochester were deadlocked at 331 each. Their nearest rival was Quincy Notre Dame at 337. After those three, the scores fell off dramatically.
If you have followed these teams for the last few years, you knew that, barring some disaster, the Lady Patriots were going to finish no worse than second.
If you’re a golfer you know that intrinsically golf is not a team sport.
