Metropolis residents can once again recycle certain items instead of sending them to the landfill.
Mayor Billy McDaniel announced during Monday’s Metropolis City Council meeting that Holt Recycling is now accepting cardboard and paper, glass, plastic, batteries and electronic scrap
The city has been working for over a year to again provide recycling for its residents.
“Anytime you’ve got a facility that’s open to the general public where there’s not monitoring or oversight, it’s hard to do correctly,” McDaniel observed of the city’s past recycling effort. “It’s not hard to collect; you’re just not collecting the right things.”
The City of Metropolis, along with Bulldog Systems, offered a recycling bin for residents from the early spring of 2009 until July 2011 when the bin was taken away due to misuse — specifically the placement of potentially hazardous materials along with items labeled for recycling.
Holt Recycling is accepting sorted recyclables from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
While the list of items that are acceptable and not under each main category varies, there are some specific guidelines, including:
• Lids from all containers must be removed and sorted appropriately.
• All food and liquid containers have to be cleaned out.
• Holt Recycling may reject some recyclables and reserves the right to change the list of items.
Holt Recycling is located at 910 E. Second St. in Metropolis. For more information, call 524-2109.
