Born March 5, 1930 in Chicago, Mrs. Johnson earned a degree in law from De Paul University in 1953. She served as Pope County State’s Attorney and later practiced in Metropolis, where she was Massac County Public Defender. At the age of 58, she earned a master’s degree in counseling from Southern Illinois University and worked with Massac County Mental health in Metropolis and New Horizons Women Shelter in La Crosse, where she was an advocate for women and children through the counseling of her clients and patients.
Survivors include one brother, John Novotny of Oak Lawn; one sister, Annette Penrod of La Grange; and her children, Daniel Johnson, Louis Johnson Jr., Joel Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Ellen Johnson and Christine Campbell.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Louis Johnson; one son, Paul Johnson; her parents, Emily and John Novotny; and one sister, Arlene Ware.
Mrs. Johnson’s body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
