The most dramatic moment of the tournament came in the Tuesday, Feb. 12 first round match-up with Carbondale, when the Terriers’ McKenna Miller collided with Massac’s Natalie Bailey sending Bailey face first to the hardwood.
Bailey lay motionless until play was stopped and help arrived but her soft moans were heard throughout the gym.
Bailey ultimately suffered a badly cut chin and concussion-like effects from the face-plant.
That put Massac County without her services, along with Emily Hoard and Taylor Klankey.
Losing a key starter like Hoard is bad enough, now throw in one of her replacements — and a part-time starter to boot — in Klankey and one of your key subs in Bailey and Massac seemed severely short-handed for the tournament.
But on a team with some veterans, you hope upperclassmen step up their play and that’s precisely what happened.
