Staff Report

Five homes in Massac County will receive work from several volunteers from the community on Saturday during the 17th annual Rebuilding Together workday.

Volunteer teams from area businesses and churches will begin the workday at 8 a.m. at Randy Rushing’s building located in 800 block of West 10th Street, across the side street from Metropolis Community Center, where they will receive their assignments and head out to begin the work.

Those homes scheduled to receive repairs include:

• Donald and Rose Parmley, 1131 E. Seventh St. — LaFarge and MCHS National Honor Society

• Aline Ragain, 2100 North Ave. — Doug Hopkins Const. and Electric Energy Inc.

• Roberta Leek, Franklin Lindstrom and Kathy Skidmore, 904 Vienna St. — Harrah’s Casino and Hotel

• Linda Hardman, 208 W. Ninth St. — Cook Coal Terminal

• Barry Funk, 1411 Girard St. — Linwood Motors/Michael Baker

Volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes, mops, buckets, shovels, wheelbarrows, small ladders and more to aid in the work throughout the day.

Metropolis’ Liberty Utility will be providing lunch for the volunteers. Meals will be delivered to each of the work sites.

Rebuilding Together Metropolis is a not-for-profit organization that rehabilitates the houses of low-income homeowners, in particular those individuals who are elderly or have disabilities. The rehabilitation program enables those individuals to continue to live in warmth, safety and independence.

Nationally, the organization was founded in 1988 and is the largest volunteer home repair initiative in America. The Metropolis affiliate was founded in 1997, with four homeowners receiving improvements.

In its 16th year history, the program has completed approximately 140 projects, many of which have rehabilitated homes.

Sandy Dailey, Rebuilding coordinator, encourages anyone who may be willing to donate some time to call her at 524-5627 or show up at the meeting, where she and other Rebuilding Together organizers will assign volunteers a home to work at. “There will be plenty of jobs for volunteers to do,” she said.
