Col. Leon “Bud” Howk, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2013 in Satellite Beach, Fla.

Bud was born April 7, 1918 in Lakewood, Ohio. He graduated from flight school on Oct. 30, 1940 at Luke Field Arizona. He was a fighter pilot and left for the South Pacific in January 1942. He went first to Australia and then to New Guinea, where his squadron had an airfield in the jungle. For his service there, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After his retirement in 1966, Bud and his family moved to Satellite Beach where he resided until his death. He was a former member of the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, SunTree Country Club, Patrick Officers Club and Patrick Golf Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a founding member of the Azan Temple.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Barbara Neff Howk, formerly of Metropolis; two children, Craig William Howk and Candyce Howk Bennett.

Graveside service was held Friday at Chapel of Peace, Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Fla. with full military honors conducted.
