Staff Report

Jonathan Haverkamp and Rebecca Shepard were each awarded $1000 after receiving the Coach J.D. Seitzinger Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was established to award two scholarships each year to one senior track member and one senior cross country athlete, both from Massac County High School, who showed hard work and dedication to their sport and team — qualities that Seitzinger admired in his athletes.

The applicants submitted a 250-word or less essay citing their accomplishments in school and sports and their future plans and goals.

Haverkamp, son of John and Mina Haverkamp of Metropolis, is a track member.

He will be attending Shawnee Community College for an associate degree and will then transfer to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale to obtain a degree in forestry.

Shepard, daughter of Gina Shepard of Metropolis, is a cross country member.

She will be attending West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah.

Seitzinger passed away Feb. 24, 2012.

A teacher at MCHS, Seitzinger also coached the school’s track and field teams and cross country team for several years.
