Lester had worked at Southern Illinois Steel in Metropolis and retired as a mechanic after 20 years of service at Electric Energy Inc. of Joppa.
As a member of the Southern Illinois Washer Pitching Association, Lester was an avid and competitive washer pitcher. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching, reading his Bible and doing activities with his great-granddaughter.
Lester was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rosalee O’Brien Barger; one son, Jeff Barger and wife Jackie of Paducah; one daughter, Penny Garner of Antioch, Tenn.; one grandson, Cory Garner of West Chester, Pa.; one very special great-granddaughter, Lillie Garner of Metropolis; and one sister Ressie Powers of Metropolis.
Lester is also survived by two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bertha Brown Barger; three sisters, Jessie Shelton, Ruth Ramage and Kathleen Giffin; and one infant brother, Ray.
Graveside service was held Sunday at IOOF Cemetery in Metropolis with Rev. Frank Forthman officiating.
Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home of Metropolis was in charge of the arrangements.
