If one needed additional proof that Massac County’s Lady Patriots were one of the best teams in the state, look no further than the IHSA Class A and Class AA state finals.

Massac County split their two games with Nashville — both teams scored five runs in the two games — and shut out Goreville 10-0 with Kaylee Childers tossing a perfect game against the Lady Blackcats.

Nashville and Goreville just wrapped up their trips to Peoria with wins in the third place games.

Nashville lost a tough one to eventual state champ Kankakee McNamara, which ended the season unbeaten at 35-0.

Nashville starter Maci Ingram gave up three hits, two that left the yard, and trailed 3-0 after one inning, but shut down McNamara on just one hit and no runs for the rest of the game.

Nashville, however, was stymied by Kankakee pitching, until the seventh inning when they rallied for two runs but just fell short losing 3-2.

Goreville lost to Toledo Cumberland 8-4 in semi-final action but then blasted Glasford-Illini Bluffs 13-6 to take third.

In Class A baseball, Shawnee High School’s Indians also brought home a third place trophy with a win over Salt Fork.

Rain and nasty weather played havoc with the state championship series as several games were suspended and shortened to five inning affairs.
