For Massac County High School and new head football coach John Warren, a corner has been turned.

With the resignation of longtime coach Kelly Glass, MCHS found itself in a rather strange position — that of looking for a new face to man the controls of the Patriot football program.

With the hiring of Warren, a new, blank page is ready for the players as well as the first-year head coach.

Warren comes to Metropolis via a rather circuitous route. Born in Olney, he graduated from Fairfield Community High School prior to attending and playing football at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill., and Ketucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro. He finished his collegiate career at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Warren was an assistant at Fairfield for a year before doing a five-year stint at Cypress Christian in Houston, Texas. He is lately from South East High School in Bradenton, Fla., where he was an assistant coach.

Warren and his wife Amy, who is from Fairfield, have three kids: 13-year-old daughter Brooke, 8-year-old son Alix and 5-year-old son Nix.

Now back home in southern Illinois, Warren likes what he sees.

“My boys are so glad to be out of the city — they have room to run and play where we’re at now.”

First impression of Patriot football? “I’m impressed. Coach Glass left a solid foundation here with these kids,” he observed. “These boys look like good ‘blue-collar’ kids and so far they don’t mind hard work. I’ve seen some athletic kids and some potential playmakers. I’m realistic about the upcoming season, but we intend to get back on the right track and with some good, positive motivation and an early win or two . . . you never know.”
