A familiar face will be leaving Massac Memorial Hospital (MMH) on June 25, when David Fuqua steps down as the hospital’s CEO after five years.

Fuqua is returning to Marshall County Hospital in Benton, Ky. on July 1 as CEO, a position he previously held from 1995 to 1999.

MMH board recently announced that William “Bill” Hartley of Eddyville will be CEO of the hospital and will start on June 24. He most recently was vice president of business development at Harrisburg Medical Center and, prior to that position, Hartley was CEO at several critical access hospitals, like Massac Memorial.

A native of west Tennessee and currently residing in Marshall County, Fuqua is leaving MMH with more than 20 years of health care administration experience — working in five additional hospitals in four states.

“I struggled with this decision [to leave]…it’s been one of the hardest decisions of my career on whether to stay or go,” said Fuqua.

The opening of Massac Memorial Medical Clinic at 1204 W. 10th St. was under Fuqua’s tenure, as well as the completion of the hospital’s multi-million dollar remodeling project.

“Moving the clinic was a definite winner,” explained Fuqua. “We have added a second nurse practitioner and now have a gastroenterology doctor, an obstetrics doctor and an ears, nose and throat doctor available, and I would like to see the hospital add some more. The clinic was designed to add more doctors. For a lot of people, it’s hard to see a specialist, either because of travel problems or doctors wouldn’t take a patient’s medical and/or insurance card.”

Although the clinic and the completion of the remodel might be a shining star on the exterior in Fuqua’s time at MMH, it’s what he has dealt with behind the scenes that maybe he is most proud of.
