Thompson is stepping aside after a successful five-year tenure at the helm of the Massac County High School boys golf program.
Citing two reasons — namely a daughter coming up on her second birthday and a new business venture — Thompson thought it prudent on his part to turn the coaching job over to man who has been his assistant for the last couple of years.
“I was prepared to give it one more year if the school couldn’t find a replacement, but I was pretty sure that they would have no problem with naming Gary as my replacement,” said Thompson. “I’m confident that Bear will carry on the great tradition that Patriot golf has.”
Under Thompson’s tutelage, the Patriots won five straight regional titles — three as a Class A school and the last two as a Class AA school; sent four boys to college on scholarships; and had four boys qualify to compete for individual state championships.
