Residents in Massac County driving by Massac County Fire Department on a Tuesday might notice extra vehicles sitting in the parking lot. What they might not know is the group of young people who meet every week are the future of the fire department, and someday one or more of those people may be responding to a burning house or vehicle accident call.

Fighting fires is something Massac County Fire Chief Mike Childers has done for over 38 years of his life and he initiated the Trainee Program two years ago in an effort for the fire department to be able to fill opening with the people with the most knowledge. The recruitment program is open to people of all ages.

“I’m so tickled we’ve got this in place. It’s the future of our fire department,” said Childers.

When someone wants to join Massac County’s fire department, now they come to the department and fill out an application and begin the trainee program, which aims to train potential firefighters before they actually see their first house fire or vehicle accident.
