High school sports set to begin this week

If you like high school sports, the fun is about to begin. Local high schools will kick off the 2013 seasons for various sports, some as early as this weekend.

Patriot &

Lady Patriot Golf

For Massac County Patriot fans, the always dangerous Lady Patriot golf team will compete this weekend in the Marquette Blast-off at Alton.

The boys team, under new coach Gary Adkins, will also open this Saturday in the Anna-Jonesboro Invitational at Union County Country Club.

Lady Patriot Tennis

The Patriot girls’ tennis team plays at home next week with matches against Carmi and Centralia on Monday and Tuesday.

Patriot Soccer

Patriot soccer will get underway next week when the team takes on Community Christian Academy on Aug. 29 in Paducah.

Lady Patriot Volleyball

The young and talented Lady Patriot volleyball team will be unveiled Thursday at 6 p.m. with a “Meet the Patriots” program.

The ladies’ first game is scheduled for Tuesday against Marion.

Patriot Football

And, are you ready for some football?

The “Meet the Patriots” football kick-off will be Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

New coach John Warren welcomes all Patriot fans out to the field to get behind the rebuilding Patriots.

The evening will feature the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams all playing intersquad games.

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

Concessions will be available, and Patriot T-shirts and sweatshirts will be on sale.

The public is welcome to attend.

All proceeds will benefit the MCHS football program.

The schedule includes:

• 6:30 p.m. — Massac Youth Football scrimmage.

• 7 p.m. — MCHS dance team performs.

• 7:05 p.m. — National anthem performed by Franklin School students.

• 7:15 p.m. — MCHS freshmen versus junior varsity scrimmage.

• 7:45 p.m. — MCHS cheerleaders perform.

• 7:48 p.m. — MCHS band performs.

• 8 p.m. — MCHS varsity versus junior varsity scrimmage.

Lady Rangers Volleyball

Meanwhile, down at Joppa, the new Lady Rangers volleyball team is anxious to get started as well.

Head coach Michelle Johnson will take her charges to Century on Monday evening to kick off the new venture for Joppa High School.
