Local contestants to compete in pageants on Sunday

Excitement is building for the 2014 Miss Metropolis Scholarship Program, set for 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The pageant will be held at Harrah’s Special Events Center in Metropolis.

During the evening, the Miss Metropolis Outstanding Teen will also be crowned as well as Miss Metropolis Outstanding Preteen and the Miss Metropolis Princess.

Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen 2012 Grace Khachaturian will co-emcee the event along with Emily Farmer.

Entertainment this year will feature Taylor Deming, Miss Metropolis 2013; Kelsey Strong, Miss Metropolis Outstanding Teen 2013; Camryn Atkison, Miss Metropolis Outstanding Preteen 2013; and Callie Looper, 2013 Miss Metropolis Princess.

Miss Metropolis contestants are:

• Paula Jaco, 18, of Metropolis, daughter of Bobby and Katie Jaco; talent: dramatic monologue titled I’m not so afraid; and platform: Take 10, Save 3: The Importance of Red Cross Blood Donation.

• Rachael Leek, 17, of Metropolis, daughter of Charles and Nancy Leek; talent: musical theater with Anything Goes; and platform: Performing Arts for Youth.

• Haley McCaslin, 17, of Metropolis, daughter of Bradley and Karri Leach; talent: pop vocal Listen to Your Heart; and platform: One Text or Call Could Wreck it All.

• Mackenzie Meadows-Puckett, 17, of Metropolis, daughter of Robert and Doris Puckett; talent: piano performing Whitewater Chopped Sticks; and platform: H.E.A.R.T. Smart — Fighting Against Childhood Obesity.

They will compete in interview, talent, swimsuit and evening wear.

Miss Outstanding Teen contestants are:

• Danielle Carnes, 13, of Metropolis, daughter of James and Angela Carnes; talent: theatrical vocal of I Dreamed a Dream; and platform: Bully Rebellion.

• Sidney Strong, 14, of Metropolis, daughter of Chris and Teresa Strong; talent: flute performance of Rondo; and platform: Read to Succeed.

• Kristin Foster, 16, of Metropolis, daughter of Preston and Leesa Foster; talent: operatic vocal of Sempre Libera  and platform: L.O.V. — Leading Others to Volunteeer”.

• Ashlyn Atkison, 13, of Metropolis, daughter of Matt and Natalie Atkison; talent: classical guitar performance of Moonlight Sonata; and platform: World Vision.

These ladies will compete in interview, talent, evening wear and lifestyle fitness apparel.

Miss Metropolis Outstanding Preteen contestants are:

•Yolina Lindquist, 10, of Metropolis, daughter of Lars and Leila Lindquist; talent: self-written dramatic monologue of Ghost Voices in Metropolis; and platform; Learn to Swim and Save a Life.

• Courtney Burgess , 11, of Metropolis, daughter of Matthew and Dandi Burgess; talent: piano performance of Boogie Boardin’; and platform: Need to Read.

• Ashlynn Kommer, 10, of Metropolis, daughter of John and Dena Kommer; talent: piano performance of The Pink Panther; and platform: Adopt A Pet.

This year marks the sixth annual princess competition.  The young lady selected as 2014 Miss Metropolis Princess will appear throughout the year with Miss Metropolis 2014.  She will also go on to participate in the 2014 Miss Illinois Pageant in June. The program is designed to be a mentoring program with the new Miss Metropolis as mentor and the new princess as mentoree. 

Girls participating, all from Metropolis, are Aubry McManus, 6, daughter of Jason and Christina McManus; Julienne Conner, 5, daughter of B.J. and Lindsey Conner; Brooklyn Wentworth, 10, daughter of Melissa Simpson and Travis Wentworth; Madalyn Owens, 9, daughter of Karla Noel;  Paige English, 6, daughter of Jared and Afton English, and Livadiva Lindquist, 7, daughter of Lars and Leila Lindquist.

Ticket prices are $7 in advance if purchased from a contestant or from Sandy Farmer, pageant director, at 618-645-0363; or $8 at the door.

Refreshments will be available. A DVD of the pageant can be purchased in advance for $25 by contacting Farmer or by filling out an order form at the pageant.
