Charles O. Wells, 79, of Metropolis, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Metropolis with Rev. David Deem officiating. Military rites will follow the service.

Mr. Wells was a retired pilot, crop duster and plumber/pipefitter.

He was the former owner/operator of Charles O. Wells Plumbing, Heating & Cooling and retired from Player’s Casino as facilities manager.

He was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 160 in Murphysboro; Moose Lodge 282, where he served as past governor for several terms; American Legion Post 306, where he held several offices, most recently serving as the chaplain; VFW Post 3847; and the Metropolis Masonic Lodge 91.

He served in the Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rebecca Ridge Wells of Metropolis; two sons, Jon Darren Wells and wife Tammy of Metropolis and Charles Devin Wells of Port Ludlow, Wash.; one daughter, Shannon Dru Rehlmeyer and husband Brad of Metropolis; five grandchildren, Jon Mason Wells, Toby Ridge Wells, Stefan Dru Rehlmeyer and Bryn Aubin Rehlmeyer, all of Metropolis, and Liam David Wells of Port Ludlow; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tobie and Averil Lawrence Wells; two sisters, Marjorie Jackson and Geneva Guice; and six brothers, Harold Wells, Walter Wells, Oliver Wells, Phillip Wells, Claude Wells and Donald Wells.

Visitation will be held Friday from noon until the funeral hour at the church.
