With their original season opener cancelled by Community Christian Academy the previous week, the Massac County Soccer team was eager to finally run on the field and get the 2013 season underway at Ballard County on Sept. 5.
In an offensive bombardment and a smothering defensive performance, the Patriots scored early and often against their hosts in a dominating 7-0 thrashing of the Bombers.
Dalton Mitchell had a spectacular day, scoring four goals.
While at first glance it may appear that it was an one-person offensive show, it was in nearly all cases a team goal with good passing, possessions and attacking runs by Mitchell’s teammates that set him up so he would be the one to finish off the play and put the ball pass the goalie.
Mitchell had the honor of scoring the season’s first goal just 8 minutes into play.
This was followed up by a goal at the 13th minute that was set-up by goalie Caleb Parker’s long punt over the defense to setup a Mitchell assist for Kyle Reinwald’s short-range score.
Goals followed by: Reinwald with an assist by Mitchell, 17th minute; Mitchell, 19th minute; Alex King, 38th minute; Mitchell, with assist by freshman Caleb Duckworth, 46th minute, and a Mitchell header from Reinwald’s corner kick, 51st minute, to finish off the day’s scoring.
Defensively, Massac squashed any possible scoring opportunities for the home team throughout the game with solid performances by Duckworth, Ryan Schroeder and Zac Henderson among others to keep Parker under little distress all evening to earn the defensive shutout.
The 7-0 opening night win was a good start to what is anticipated to be a promising season for the Soccer Patriots with a deep talented bench and strengths on both side of the ball.
