The number four was prevalent for the day for the Massac County Cross-Country teams at the River-to-River Conference Meet held at Murphysboro on Thursday.

The Patriots earned a respectable middle of the pack, fourth-place finish as a team, while on the Lady Patriots’ side, Leilani Hill was an individual medal winner with a notable fourth-place finish.

For the boys, this was a leap up in standings from years past, forging ahead of conference foes Harrisburg and West Frankfort.

Murphysboro, the meet’s home host, won the Ohio Division of the conference with a very strong showing.

The girls did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

However, Hill, a junior, made her presence known for the Lady Patriots finishing fourth overall in the Ohio Division behind two exceptional Herrin runners and a Murphy runner, to earn individual medal honors.

The Massac harriers began to round out the season with a meet in Benton on Monday, which is in preparation for Saturday’s IHSA Regional Meet in West Frankfort.

The top regional individual and team qualifiers advance and continue on to the next round for the sectional meet in Edwardsville.
