Les Hanak, 94, of Brookport, formerly of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., passed away on Wednesday evening, Oct. 23, 2013 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Les was a manager of the Ronkonkoma Pirates baseball team for 25 years; a charter member of Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department since 1938, serving as treasurer and secretary of the fire department; and a World War II Army Veteran.

Mr. Hanak retired from Grumman Aircraft, working on the F-14 from conception to finish, built his own home and kept a large garden most of his life.

Les is survived by his wife, Emma, of 71 years; his children, Leslie Hanak and wife Nancy of Woodstock, Ga., Sharon Nelson and husband John of Calvert City, Ky. and Andrea Douglas and husband David of Brookport; one daughter-in-law, Maria Hanak of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Rudolph Hanak and wife Joyce of Holbrook, Long Island, N.Y.; one sister, Wilma Jursicik and husband Ted of Boca Raton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Hanak; one son, Ted Hanak; and four brothers, Andrew, Arthur, Alfred and Edward Hanak.

Funeral service was held Saturday at Brookport Funeral Home with Tim Pearcy officiating.
