After advancing out of the regional round for only the second time in the last eight years, Massac County High School boys cross country season came to an end Saturday at sectionals in Edwardsville.

“We performed well, and I’m proud of each of our boys,” said head coach Lindsay Zeiler. “Just the overall experience for the team to advance and race at sectionals was invaluable. It’s something for us to build upon into the future.”

For the sectional meet, over 160 runners competed representing the best in Class A schools from the southern third of Illinois. Freeburg won the overall team title from the 21-team field.

Derek Lawrence was the first Patriot harrier to cross the finish line, followed by teammates Kendall Henderson, Dan Fort, Clayton Obermark, Ross Scheve, Reed Scheve and Ben Markus.

Kyle Lawrence made the trip as an alternate but was not needed to be substituted in to compete.

Zeiler congratulates seniors Fort, Ross Scheve and Reed Scheve for a good season and cross country career.

Though the season may be officially over, the running really never stops. After giving the legs and minds a week or two of rest, many of these runners plan to keep training through fall and winter in preparation for spring track season.
