James M. “Jim” Johnston, 66, of Mountain Brook, Ala., formerly of Metropolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013 in Alabama.

Born March 8, 1947 in Metropolis, Mr. Johnston graduated from Metropolis Community High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He lived most of his adult life in Birmingham, Ala. and retired from O’Neal Steel.

Survivors include his wife, Lee Ritchie Johnston; two daughters, Glendinning Johnston and Shannon Johnston Johnson and husband Brad; three grandchildren, Avery Reese, Aislin Clover and Trevor James Johnson; two sisters, Flora Sullivan and Nellie McCormick Holt, both of Metropolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Violet R. Cummins Johnston; four sisters; and four brothers.

A military graveside service was held Oct. 15 at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Ala.

Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Ala. was in charge of arrangements.
