Massac County’s information officer David Searby released on Tuesday morning that volunteer registration would begin Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the site of the old Veach’s truck stop at the intersection of Ill. 145 and U.S. 45.

Originally misinformation was circulated on social media that volunteers were to meet on Monday morning and Searby said he understands people’s need to help, but stressed it was important for the damage assessment teams from the National Weather Service and from Illinois Emergency Management Agency to complete a thorough damage assessment report. To do that Searby said the storm debris must remain in place until that assessment is completed. Searby said having a complete damage assessment would help with efforts in possibly receiving a federal disaster declaration, which he emphasized could take awhile
