Massac County’s Patriot basketball team enjoyed a successful, if not slightly crazy, week as they notched three more wins to move to 7-2 on the young season.

The Pats came out on the winning end of a Thursday game at Goreville that bore a strong resemblance to a WWE event.

A gazillion fouls, almost a gazillion turnovers, three technical fouls and a 54-foot buzzer-beater by Goreville’s Daniel Lanham to end the first half gave the crowd plenty to buzz about.

Goreville took advantage of 19 Massac County first half fouls and went into halftime with a 35-27 lead. That lead could have been bigger if Goreville hadn’t turned the ball over so much.

But Massac opened with a patented third quarter defensive stand and raced out on a 15-2 run to retake the lead. Massac’s decisive third quarter turned on a big runout from Dalton Mitchell, who raced the length of the court for a layup.

Moments later Andy Walquist took a feed from Mitchell and laid it in, and then the hammer fell on Goreville.

Kyle Reinwald dropped a big three on the Blackcats just before Goreville coach Todd Tripp drew a technical for protesting Zeke Snell’s third personal foul. Mitchell swished both technical free throws, and seconds later, Reinwald delivered the “coup de grace” with his second trey.

Massac for all intents and purposes had the game there.
