From passage of a tax levy to the hiring of an interim principal, board members of Joppa-Maple Grove School District have been busy the past two months.

The board met Nov. 25 with the Joppa Teachers Association providing a board appreciation dinner.

During the evening, the board adopted a resolution regarding the estimated amounts of tax levy. The board’s tax levy must be filed with the Massac County Clerk by the last Tuesday in December.

The district has been a member of the Illinois Energy Consortium (IEC) Membership and Participation Agreement since 2005. The IEC provides electric supply and administration to help its member organizations control costs and achieve budget goals.

Membership includes about 500 school districts serving Over 1500 accounts with one billion kWh in annual usage.

According to Superintendent Bill Biggerstaff, the district has had good success with the utilization of this service and as a member of the consortium.

The board approved continuing with IEC for a three-year term.

Biggerstaff also reported that the bid openings for the district’s remodeling of the old athletic director’s office and men’s restroom in the high school lobby area were on Oct. 23. Board President Stacey Reames signed a contract with Zeller Construction Inc. to continue forward in this process. No new update was available on the start/completion times.

The Regional Office of Education (ROE) approved and forwarded the district’s health/life safety application for the new telephone system to the state department on Nov. 5. As of Nov. 25, the district has not received any information from the state.
