Massac County’s Patriots followed a disappointing 67-62 loss to Benton on Friday with a big 64-61 win over Marshall County at Mustang Madness Saturday afternoon.

At Benton, the Rangers took a five-point lead, 15-10, at the first horn and maintained it at 32-28 at the half. The Rangers looked like they might get away from Massac in the third quarter as they rained three pointers on the Pats and managed an 11-point lead just before the end of the frame.

Trailing 55-46 entering the final eight minutes, the Pats came to life led by Jalen Roundtree. Roundtree scored the first five points of the fourth quarter cutting the Ranger lead to 55-51.

But Benton’s eighth three-pointer of the night from Trey McDaniel quieted the noise from Massac. A Dalton Mitchell triple and another steal and layup from Roundtree reignited the Pats and cut the lead to 59-58 at the 2:10 mark.

Down the stretch, free throw shooting was crucial, and Benton responded with a clutch six for six in the last 60 seconds. Ranger freshman Derek Oxford made nine of 11 for the night from the stripe.

Roundtree led Massac in scoring with 22 followed by Mitchell with 16 and Kendall with 12. Nat Higgins led Benton with 17 followed by Oxford with 16.

The Pats had a high noon encounter with the Marshall County Marshals on Saturday and it turned out to be a real shootout. This one went right down to the wire before Massac emerged with the three-point win.
