Robert M. Barnett, 84, of Hopedale, formerly of Bartonville and Karnak, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at Hopedale Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 4, 1929, in Joppa, Mr. Barnett served with the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1952. He worked as an air traffic controller at the Peoria Airport from 1960 until his retirement in 1977 as an assistant chief. He previously worked in air traffic control in Jackson, Mich. and Vandalia.Mr. Barnett was a member of Bartonville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Steve Barnett and wife Nancy of Muskegon, Mich., Greg Barnett and wife Cheri of Springfield and Jeff Barnett and wife Janof Huntington Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, Angie Bagdasarian, Zachary Barnett, Sean Barnett, Rob Barnett, Drew Barnett and Jimmy Barnett; two great-grandchildren, Adam and Austin Bagdasarian; two sisters, Norma Travis and husband Don of Metropolis and Kathy Gill and husband Paul of Vilonia, Ark.; and two brothers, Calvin Barnett and wife Mary of Karnak and Ron Barnett and wife Susan of Carterville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Lillian Snyder Barnett; his wife of 61 years, Shirley Simmons Barnett.

Funeral service was held Saturday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton with Pastor Frank Brozenec officiating. Military rites were conducted at the funeral home following the service. Burial followed at Roberts Cemetery in Morton.

Memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, Midwest Chapter.
