West Frankfort’s wiry forward Hunter Johnson was a one-man wrecking crew in the final frame of Friday night’s 62-54 win over Massac County.

Behind Jalen Roundtree’s five first quarter points, the Patritos staked themselves to a 16-11 lead and seemed to be in a pretty good groove. Massac duplicated their scoring in the second quarter and led 32-26 at halftime.

West Frankfort looked a little overmatched but this is a far better team than the last few years’ editions, and they showed it at crunch time.

Massac seemed on course for the win through the first three quarters as they again put up 16 counters in the third quarter and led 48-40 going into the final eight minutes.

A nifty steal by Patriot Dalton Mitchell, with a heads-up bounce off of a Redbird defender as he slid out of bounds, set up a nice assist to Austin Kendall to open the last quarter giving the Patriots a 10-point lead at 50-40.

But that is where Mr. Johnson said enough.
