Carbondale’s Lady Terriers won their own Mid-Winter Tournament Saturday with a 64-55 win over Massac County.

Massac had a blowout win over Marion in their first game of the six team, three game format held Jan. 20-25.

The ladies then held on to post a tight 47-46 win over Mt. Vernon in their second game. Against the Lady Rams, Massac clung to small leads all the way to the final quarter but Mt.Vernon took a brief lead with just over four minutes left to play.

Emily Hoard then proceeded to squash the Rams’ hopes with a defensive rebound and a length of the court drive to the hoop. In the last two minutes of play, the Lady Patriots were just efficient enough at the foul line to put the game away at 47-43 with three seconds left.

A “Hail Mary” heave at the buzzer swished the twines for the Lady Rams but it was too little, too late.

Hoard led the Lady Patriots with 16 points.

The title game was close for one quarter with Massac actually leading for most of the first eight minutes, but the second quarter was a horse of a different color.
