The real season begins now for area high schools as the ladies begin regional play this week.

Class A kicked off first as local small schools began play Tuesday. At Golconda, number 1 seed Goreville tangled with the winner of Hardin County and Gallatin County in Tuesday night’s opener. In the nightcap, number 2 Pope County and number 3 Joppa-Maple Grove squared off. That regional will be decided Friday night at 7 p.m. At Meridian, number 1 seed Cairo and number 2 seed Century begin play today, Feb. 12.

With Massac being bumped to Class 3A, 2A action will consist of about two-thirds of the River to River conference with the nearest local school being Vienna.

Coach Jim Prevallett’s charges were in action Monday night against Anna-Jonesboro at Murphysboro. The Lady Eagles advanced with a 36-33 win over A-J and will face Carterville next.

Massac County will host the 3A regional beginning Monday with Mt. Vernon and Centralia meeting in the 6 p.m. opener and Herrin and Marion playing the second game. The winner of the first game will play number 1 seed Carbondale in the Tuesday night opener and the winner of the second game will get the host school, number 2 seed Massac County.

The winner of the Metropolis regional will move on to the Carbondale sectional, playing the winner of the Cahokia regional on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
