Mrs. Oliver attended nursing school in St. Louis before returning to Metropolis, where she worked at Fisher Hospital in Metropolis and married her sweetheart, Kenneth Oliver, when he returned from World War II.
Virgie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who worked tirelessly to make a loving home for her family.
She and her husband were long-time members of Metropolis First Christian Church, where she sung in the choir for over 50 years.
Virgie later worked as an office manager for her and Kenneth’s business, Tri-State Filter Co.
Virgie is survived by her son, Randy Oliver and wife Kay of Metropolis; one daughter, Judy Early and husband John of Golden, Colo.; four grandchildren, Amy Krueger and husband Bryan of Metropolis, Ryan Oliver and wife Rachel of Paducah, Denny Bauer and wife Rebecca of Austin, Texas and Zachary Bauer and wife Amanda of Golden; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Oliver; her parents, Ethel and Lee Fisher; one sister Jacqueline Johnson; and an infant sister, Faye.
Funeral service was held Friday at First Christian Church in Metropolis with Rev. Rob Rixman officiating. Burial followed at Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home of Metropolis was in charge of arrangements.
