The defending state champion Massac Junior High School Lady Trojans have kicked off another season with a perfect 13-0 winning streak.
The undefeated volleyball team competed Feb. 21-22 at the eight-team Giant City Tournament.
Leading players for the Lady Trojans were Aubrey Biggers who led the team with 15 kills and made the all-tournament team. Bailey Cissell closely followed with 13 kills. Mya Draffen tallied 21 service points. Alayna Reed led in blocks with four. Ellie Weber paced the team with 31 assists and also made the all-tournament team.
The most nail-biting part of the game was when Massac was down 20-23 and Aurora Bass served five consecutive points, the last four being aces.
Following this victory was another win at the Marion Varsity Tournament on March 7. Biggers led the team in kills with 22. Emily Griffith followed with 12, and Cissel with seven. Alayna Reed led with five blocks. Bailey Duckworth had nine digs followed by Brooke Stepter with eight digs. Taylor Williams led serve/receive going 18/19. Weber led the team with 40 assists.
The championship game was action packed and nerve-wracking. It ended with Massac and Desoto clawing for first place. The set scores were 16-25, 25-15, and 15-10. Weber was astounding in the final match with 19 total service points, 18 assists, nine kills and six aces. Biggers followed with 11 kills, six assists and six digs.
On Saturday, the Lady Trojans will host the eighth annual Lady Trojans Invitational Tournament.
Competitors include Jonesboro, Eldorado, Goreville, Lick Creek, Anna, Creal Springs, Shawnee and Ewing.
The first game starts at 9 a.m. Games will be played at Massac County High School and the Massac Junior High School.
The Lady Trojans’ season will wind up March 20 and 22 at the Harrisburg Class L regional.
