Ms. Wilkens received her master’s degree in education and spent most of her teaching career in the third grade classroom at Central School in Metropolis.
Helen had a love for bridge and enjoyed the time she spent playing with the ladies in her group. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Metropolis.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Mastela and husband Richard and Lynn Huffman and husband Calvin; two sons, Nelson Wilkens and wife Marilyn and Robert “Robbie” Wilkens; four grandchildren, Christie Walters and husband Ben, Brad Wilkens and wife Kate, Matt Wilkens and wife Jessica and Staci Smith; three great-grandchildren, Courtney, Jordyn and Zackary; one brother, Charlie Austin and wife Barbara; one sister, Roberta Dillow; one brother-in-law, Stan Evans; three sisters-in-law, Judy Austin, Ginger Austin and Kitty Vaughn; a special niece, Tracy Gamblin and husband Steve; numerous other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cherished friends, especially her neighbors, Rose, Emma Jean and Vera.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kes and Bertha Austin; her mother-in-law, Marie Wilkens; twin brother, Herb Austin; brother, Bob Austin; sister, Clare Jean; and brother-in-law, Curtis Vaughn.
Funeral service was held Saturday at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with Rev. Jon Cockrel officiating.
Burial followed at Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Brad Wilkens, Matt Wilkens, Richard Mastela, Calvin Huffman and Steve Gamblin.
