Although the weather has been less than cooperative, Massac County’s baseball team has gotten in four games and come out on top in three of those contests.

Massac opened with a 17-1 romp over Pope County on March 18. Jay Benard was the winning pitcher for the Pats in the opener with Jon Duley getting the mop up duties going the last two innings. Benard, J.T. Weber and Luke Wieneke were the hitting stars in the opening game.

Carbondale shut out the Pats 5-0 Thursday in Carbondale with Noah Thornburg quieting the Patriots on just two hits.

The Pats let a big opportunity slip through their fingers in the second inning when they had runners on second and third but failed to score as Thornburg bowed up and struck out the side. Dalton Mitchell was victimized by the lack of support and some poor fielding and took the loss.

Ashton “Big Mac” McDuffee was effective in relief of Mitchell, but it was a case of too much Thornburg.
